
5-Day Break
Day 1 – Local departure by coach then onward to Arras for four nights.
Day 2 – Gommecourt, Serre & Beaumont-Hamel (included). The first phase of our tour looks at 1st July 1916 – the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, and the bloodiest day of the British Army. We start at the village of Gommecourt where the 46th (North Midland) and 56th (London) Divisions fought. We then visit the battlefield at Serre, seeing the Sheffield Memorial Park, remains of the British front line and Pals monuments. We look at the fighting for Beaumont-Hamel, seeing the Sunken Lane where the 1st Lancashire Fusiliers attacked from, and walk up to Hawthorn Ridge where a huge mine was blown. We end the day at the Newfoundland Park. B
Day 3 – Thiepval to Montauban (included). We continue with the First Day of the Somme at Thiepval where the memorial to the missing commemorates nearly 73,000 who have no known grave. At Ovillers we look at the attack on Mash Valley. Lunchtime at the Ulster Tower. In the afternoon we see the huge Lochnagar Crater at La Boisselle, and then visit German graves at Fricourt. At the village of Mametz we visit the moving Devonshire Cemetery, then end the day at Montauban, where Captain Billie Neville and his men kicked footballs into battle. B
Day 4 – Battle of the Somme – Historial Museum, Peronne (included). Today our tour looks at some key sites from the later fighting on the Somme. We start at Mametz Wood, and then High Wood, which saw the only cavalry charge on the Somme in 1916. At the Butte de Warlencourt we see where the Somme came to an end, and then finish our tour at the Historial Museum in the Peronne. B
Day 5 – To Calais and return home. B

You will stay for four nights at the 3-star Holiday Inn Express in Arras, situated in the centre of the town. All bedrooms have T.V., air-conditioning and telephone. The hotel has a lift, breakfast room and bar.

You will stay for four nights at the 3-star Mercure Atria Arras, situated in the heart of the city. The hotel has a restaurant and bar and all bedrooms have T.V. and telephone.
