The Somme Anniversary

The Somme Anniversary

4-Day Break

Day 1 – June 29th. Morning departure from London or Ashford and travel to Dover for the crossing to France. We travel through northern France with historical explanation and personal war cemetery visits along the route. Check in to the Royhotel in Roye, our base for the next three nights. D
Day 2 – June 30th. Full day tour of the Somme battlefields with personal war cemetery visits en route. Highlights include Serre, Delville Wood (packed lunch) and the Lochnagar Crater. B, L, D
Day 3 – July 1st. Attend the International Service of Remembrance at Thiepval Memorial to the Missing and explore the Visitor Centre. After a packed lunch continue touring the Somme battlefield with personal cemetery visits. B, L, D
Day 4 – July 2nd. Visit Newfoundland Memorial Park visitor centre and trenches and the Ulster Tower. Afternoon departure for the ferry crossing back to Dover and return to Ashford or London. B

Please Note: Entrance fees to museums and places of interest are at extra cost.


Accommodation

You will stay for three nights at the 3-star Royhotel situated at Roye in the Upper Somme Valley. The hotel has a bar and restaurant and all rooms have a T.V.

  • Participate in the Official Service of Remembrance on July 1 at the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing
  • Personal visits to War Cemeteries in the Somme
  • Visit the huge Lochnagar mine crater, Ulster Tower and other notable sites on the Somme battlefield
  • Stand at Serre where the Pals Battalions advanced across No Man’s Land at 07.30hrs on July 1, 1916, a day when 20,000 British troops died
