Somme 95th Anniversary Tour

4 - Day Break

Jun 30 – Local departure by coach then onward to the Lille area for a threenight stay. 
Jul 1 – The Somme – 95th Anniversary: La Boisselle & Thiepval (included). We depart early for the anniversaries. We will attend the Lochnagar Crater ceremony at La Boisselle, which takes place at 07.30am, then take breakfast nearby before attending the official Royal British Legion ceremonies at the Thiepval Memorial. In the afternoon we attend any special events in the area (details have yet to be finalised and special events will be reviewed by our head Battlefield Guide, Paul Reed). B
Jul 2 – The Somme Battlefields: Death of a Generation (included). Today we visit some keys sites on the Somme battlefield. We start on the northern part of the battlefield at Serre, where we walk up to the Sheffield Memorial Park, seeing the old trenches and memorials to the many ‘Pals’ battalions. At Beaumont-Hamel we visit the famous Sunken Lane, and see where the mine was blown under Hawthorn Ridge. Lunch nearby. In the afternoon we visit the Ulster Tower Memorial at Thiepval, and then travel to the battlefield at Pozieres where we see the memorials to more than 23,000 Australian casualties. At Delville Wood we follow the story of the South African Brigade, and at Rancourt see a unique part of the battlefield where the dead from Britain, France and Germany are all commemorated. B
