The Western Front - Understanding Why

5-Day Break

Day 1 – Depart from your chosen local joining point (see page 7 for your nearest) and travel to the Channel port for the crossing to France. We continue south to Arras to the Mercure Atria hotel for a two-night stay. D
Day 2 – We tour the Somme battlefield area including the Sheffield Memorial Park, Hawthorn Ridge and Sunken Road, Beaumont Hamel, Thiepval Memorial to the Missing, Ulster Tower, the vast Lochnagar mine crater and Mametz Wood, High Wood and Delville Wood. B, D
Day 3 – We leave Arras and visit the Canadian National Vimy Ridge Memorial Park. See the preserved trenches and Memorial and take part in an Act of Remembrance. Next we head towards the Battle of Loos area. We drive over Hill 70 and see Dud Corner Cemetery and Loos Memorial to the Missing. We continue on to our hotel in Mouscron, Belgium for a two-night stay. B
Day 4 – We tour the Ypres Salient visiting Essex Farm, Langemarck German Cemetery, Vancouver Corner and the vast Tyne Cot Cemetery. There will also be time for personal cemetery visits. The rest of the day is free for you to explore Ypres maybe visit the ‘In Flanders Field’ Museum and St. George’s Church. This evening we attend the moving Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate. Dinner tonight is in a local restaurant. B, D
Day 5 – We leave Ypres and head back to Calais for the Channel crossing back to England. From there we return you to your original local joining point. B

Accommodation

You will stay for two nights at the 3-star Mercure Hotel Atria in the centre of Arras. The hotel has a restaurant and bar and all bedrooms have satellite T.V., hairdryer and telephone. You will also stay for two nights at the 4-star Best Western Hotel Alize situated close to the main square of Mouscron in Belgium.

The hotel does not have a restaurant, but snacks are available from the bar and there are a number of restaurants close by. The hotel has a lift and all bedrooms have a T.V., telephone, hairdryer, tea/coffee facilities and air-conditioning.
